Why TH Matters

TH is the most common consonant digraph in English. It appears in roughly 1 in 5 five-letter words — far more than any other consonant pair. Unlike QU, TH can appear in any position: at the start (THINK, THROW), in the middle (LATHE, OTHER), or at the end (CLOTH, NORTH, TRUTH).

In Wordle, TH is tricky because T and H are treated as separate clues. A yellow T and yellow H doesn't automatically mean TH — they could be separate letters in different positions. However if T goes green in position 1 and H goes yellow, there's a strong chance TH appears somewhere together.

💡 TH Wordle strategy

If you suspect TH, use a word that tests TH in both the start and end positions simultaneously. THEME tests TH at the start. TEETH tests TH at positions 3-4 and also tests a double E. TENTH tests TH at the end plus covers N and E.

In English words yes, TH is almost always a digraph — the two letters appear adjacent. Unlike QU however, T and H can also appear separately in a word (for example TEETH has TH as a unit but also has two standalone E's). If T and H both go yellow in separate positions, they could be together or apart in the answer.
TH appears most commonly at the start of the word (positions 1-2) in words like THINK, THERE, THOSE, and at the end (positions 4-5) in words like NORTH, SOUTH, TRUTH, MONTH. TH in the middle of a word is less common but still appears in words like LATHE, OTHER, and ETHER.
